All five Grand Rapids Sister City committees came together to establish an International Women’s Day Award. The contest was open to all secondary schools (grades 9-12) including public, parochial, charter, and home schools in the City of Grand Rapids. As the title of the essays, “A Special Woman Who Influenced Me,” suggested students reflected on a woman who had influenced them, whether they had met her or not.
The first award ceremony was held on Tuesday, March 29, 2016 at the City Commission’s meeting. GRSCI was proud to present the first International Women’s Day Essay Award to Halima Suleiman from Innovation Central High School (GRPS) who wrote a heart-touching essay about her mother.
