Each year the city of Perugia, in conjunction with the University for Foreigners, and our Grand Rapids-Perugia sister cities committee, grant two month-long scholarships to Grand Rapids area residents to study the Italian language in Perugia. These scholarships include tuition, transportation and a small stipend to help pay for lodging. Over 40 scholarships have been awarded over the years.
Perugia Hosts the Annual Fieri dei Morti Fair
In November, Perugia hosts the annual Fieri dei Morti, the “Fair of the Dead, a historical and traditional market fair which dates back to medieval times. Grand Rapids committee members are invited to bring and sell local products and the proceeds help support our scholarship programs and other events throughout the year. Dried cranberries, blueberries, and cherries, locally-produced maple syrup, and caramel corn are favorites each year for the Perugians.
Perugia High School Students
Three high school students from Perugia participated in the Grand Rapids Christian High School Student Exchange Program for the 2022-2023 school year. The Perugia committee Invited them to a Club Italia meeting and then also arranged for them to meet Mayor Rosalynn Bliss at City Hall.
30th Anniversary
2023 marks the 30th anniversary of the Grand Rapids-Perugia sister city relationship! Photos of the 25th anniversary signing here and in Perugia.
In celebration of this anniversary, we are hosting, along with Witte travel, a trip for guests from Grand Rapids and friends to Rome, and then Perugia, with a signing ceremony with Mayor Romizi.
