Written and developed by friends at the Umbra Institute, this is a guide aimed at students preparing to live and study in Perugia, so there are various insider tips for a good time and interesting places to check out that aren’t always mentioned on other tourist sites:
Il Bacio: is a cozy cellar restaurant right off of Corso Vanucci that prepares a really good pizza among a variety of pasta and meat dishes. The place is usually packed – so there’s often a wait, but you can order pizzas to go.
Civico 25: If you want something off the beaten tourist path on Via Viola. You won’t find an English menu, but the seasonal food is prepared creatively, and the wine selection is exceptional. In the summer there are a few places to sit outside.
Osteria del Tempo Perso: Another hidden restaurant. This one is a little more difficult to find near the Universita per Stranieri. Perfect if you really want wholesome, traditional food in a warm environment. Excellent wine list.
Il Parma: down Via Dei Priori 27. If you’re looking for a quick panino or something to pack for a picnic, Il Parma is a little shop with all the basics, but the made-to-order Panini here are hands-down the best.
IL Sole: Via della Rupe, 1, Check out the great panoramic view and food.
CAFES / Gelato / Pastries
Sandri Pasticceria: Historic café on the Corso Vanucci with impressive showcase displays and great breakfasts.
Gelateria Gambrinus: Ice-Cream di Carloni Matteo on Via Luigi Bonazzi has excellent gelato and so many flavors to choose from! The Trecento (300) and the limone are memorable (though not together).
Cioccolateria Augusta Perusia : Sells high quality chocolates and even better gelato. It’s very close to Universita per Stranieri at Via Pinturicchio 2. (site is only in Italian).
Pasticceria Dell’Accademia: On Via Dei Priori 52 has the best “cornetto” and fresh pastry selection. Every other week they host evenings of philosophical debates – if you’re interested.
You can get an excellent cappuccino and brioche almost anywhere in Perugia, but at:
Milano Lounge Café they’ll serve you with a smile. It’s a location of choice for any drink (7am-2am) as they have delicious espresso, excellent cocktails, wine and rich appetizer combinations. Enter on Via Giuseppe Garibaldi 2.
Il Birraio: on Via Prome is a spacious, two floor bar with a warm, almost oriental atmosphere. Perfect for a relaxing evening where you can enjoy a house-brewed beer and actually hold a conversation with friends.
